CLARK / BARNES was engaged by the King County Facilities Management Division to complete a comprehensive analysis of the condition of the building systems at the King County Courthouse, a local King County Designated Landmark.
An examination of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, vertical transportation, and life safety systems in the building was undertaken by CLARK / BARNES and a team of HVAC, electrical, low voltage, plumbing, fire protection, structural, and elevator engineers. Specialty consultants provided historic preservation, cost estimates, schedules, and risk assessments for several potential project scenarios. This five-month-long study provided a comprehensive, evidence-based analysis to the King County Council for consideration.
The council then tasked CLARK / BARNES with an emergency replacement of the building’s two electrical distribution systems, requiring electrical and structural engineers to replace the 1960s-era electrical equipment to modernize the building’s systems. The emergency work navigated the complexities of protecting historically significant zones of the building, while performing work crucial for its future functionality.
